Meryl Streep is set to receive the honorary Palme d’Or at the opening night of the 77th
Cannes Film Festival. This prestigious honor adds to the star-studded lineup of Hollywood icons attending the event. Streep will be joined by other luminaries such as George Lucas, who will also receive the honorary Palme d’Or during the festival's closing ceremony.
Streep will be in esteemed company at Cannes, where Greta Gerwig, director of "Barbie," serves as the jury president. Streep and Gerwig previously collaborated on "Little Women."
Streep's return to Cannes after decades will be celebrated with an honorary tribute recognizing her illustrious career. Her last appearance at the festival was in 1989 for "Evil Angels," for which she won the Best Actress award. Streep expressed her gratitude for the prestigious recognition, emphasizing the significance of Cannes in the international film community.
Festival president Iris Knobloch and general delegate Thierry Frémaux praised Streep's contribution to cinema, noting her iconic roles spanning nearly five decades. Frémaux, who has actively pursued Streep's involvement in Cannes, aims to honor her accomplishments with a gala ceremony and a potential onstage conversation.
Streep's extensive filmography includes acclaimed performances in "Kramer vs. Kramer," "Sophie’s Choice," "Out of Africa," "The Devil Wears Prada," and "Mamma Mia!" Known for portraying strong and multifaceted female characters, Streep has earned 21 Oscar nominations and won three times.
